I love these two with all my heart.

Best Banna kiss thus far. Although if we don’t get a passionate one by the end of the season I may through something.

[…] Bates was a padre, an Army chaplain, a reserved and stoical person who, even forty years later, refused to discuss what he had seen and done in the Great War. He had been on the Western Front since August 1914 when he was sent out with the 6th Division. At some point late in 1915 he was wounded at Ypres, shot in the leg. […]
Clearly Mr Bates was close enough to take a hit and quite a nasty one, since he ended up spending seven months in Almina’s care at Bryanston Square. […]
At the hospital he carried out his duties with determination and dignity, accompanying Almina on her rounds from the moment he was able to get out of bed and limp. Despite the X-ray machine, the operation and excellent nursing, Bates, who was a tall, broad man, was lame for the rest of his life. He used a stick and struggled with stairs. […]

Excerpt from ‘Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey’, by the Countess of Carnarvon.

Seems like Mr Fellowes did his research. This real-life war veteran Bates, so devoted to the woman who run the hospital he was cured in, exerting himself, is remembered in a way he surely wouldn’t have thought of.
